Alcestis is a tragedy by Euripides. The Moirae had promised to Admetus, Alcestis husband, that if anyone would want to die instead of him, they would allow it. The time of Admetus’ death comes. Since no one volunteers, not even his elderly parents, Alcestis steppes forth. She poisons herself. But Heracles confronts Hades and brings Alcestis back from the dead.
